Laya Trek (22 Days)

This route offers a great variety of trekking conditions, from picturesque farmland and forests to alpine pastureland and high mountain passes (16,100 ft). Spectacular campsites, beneath some of Bhutan’s most impressive peaks, including Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, are highlights of this trek. The journey also includes numerous isolated dzongs and settlements, including the extraordinary village of Laya and the rejuvenating Gasa hot springs.

Day 1 | Arrive Paro

The flight to Paro offers spectacular mountain views, including some of the world’s highest peaks like Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Chomolhari. After landing, you will be warmly greeted by our representatives who will escort you to your hotel. In the afternoon, enjoy sightseeing, including a visit to the Ta Dzong Museum, which houses an impressive collection of Bhutanese art and relics. End the day with a stroll along the cantilevered wooden bridge and take in the serene beauty of the valley.

Day 2 | Paro

Begin the day with a hike to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the "Tiger’s Nest." The trail is well-maintained, passing through rhododendron forests and offering panoramic views of the valley below. At the monastery, learn about its rich history and spiritual significance. After lunch, visit the Drukgyel Dzong and marvel at its architecture and the majestic backdrop of Mount Jomolhari. In the evening, explore Paro town and experience its quaint charm.

Day 3 | Paro – Shana (6 hours)

The trek begins with a gentle climb through rice terraces and fields of millet before entering an enchanting apple orchard. The trail winds through pine forests as you pass the army post of Gunitsawa, Bhutan’s last settlement before the Tibetan border. Along the way, you might spot Himalayan birds or small wildlife. Camp overnight in a scenic meadow surrounded by lush greenery.

Day 4 | Shana – Soil Thangthangkha (8 hours)

Today’s trail follows the Paro River, winding through dense forests of pine, oak, and spruce. You will cross suspension bridges and enjoy the melodic sounds of the river. After a steep climb, you will reach your campsite at an elevation of 3,750m. The fresh mountain air and starry night sky make this campsite a true haven for trekkers.

Day 5 | Soil Thangthangkha – Jangothang (8 hours)

As you ascend above the tree line, the landscape transforms into alpine meadows with grazing yaks. You will pass traditional yak herder camps, where you can interact with the locals and learn about their unique way of life. Arrive at Jangothang with stunning views of Chomolhari, which towers over your campsite at 4,040m.

Day 6 | Rest Day at Jangothang

Take a day to relax and acclimatise to the altitude. Explore the surrounding areas with short hikes to nearby ridges or lakes. For those seeking more adventure, climb higher trails for even closer views of Chomolhari and Jichu Drake. The serene beauty and tranquillity of the landscape are truly rejuvenating.

Day 7 | Jangothang – Lingshi (8 hours)

Today’s trail begins with a steady climb, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. Crossing the Nyele-La Pass (4,700m), you will experience one of the most rewarding moments of the trek, with panoramic vistas of Bhutan's rugged Himalayan terrain. Descend into the lush valley to camp at Lingshi, a charming village with its own dzong perched on a hill.

Day 8 | Lingshi – Chebisa (6 hours)

The trek to Chebisa is relatively short and easy, allowing you to enjoy the picturesque surroundings. Pass Lingshi Dzong and follow the trail through verdant valleys, spotting vibrant wildflowers along the way. At Chebisa, set up camp near a pristine stream and take a walk to the nearby Chebisa Waterfall.

Day 9 | Chebisa – Shoumuthang (7 hours)

Begin with a challenging ascent to Guba-La Pass (4,500m), where you will be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the valley below. The descent leads through dense rhododendron forests, alive with birdsong. Your campsite at Shoumuthang offers a tranquil setting amidst alpine pastures.

Day 10 | Shoumuthang – Robluthang (7 hours)

The trek starts with a climb to Jari-La Pass (4,700m), providing incredible views of the Himalayan ranges. Descend into Tasharijathang Valley, home to the rare Himalayan Takin. Watch for herds of these unique animals grazing in the lush pastures. Camp at Robluthang, surrounded by high peaks.

Day 11 | Robluthang – Limithang (8 hours)

Today’s highlight is crossing the Shinji-La Pass (4,900m), the highest point of the trek. The descent to Limithang is steep but filled with jaw-dropping views of Gangchenta Peak. The day ends with a peaceful campsite at Limithang, set against the dramatic mountain backdrop.

Day 12 | Limithang – Laya (5 hours)

Enjoy a gentle walk through lush forests and moss-covered trails to the village of Laya. Known for its unique culture, Laya is home to the Layap people, who wear distinctive bamboo hats. Spend the evening experiencing their hospitality and learning about their traditional way of life.

Day 13 | Rest Day at Laya

Spend the day exploring Laya village and its surroundings. Visit local homes to learn about the Layap culture and enjoy traditional Bhutanese tea and chang. The slower pace of the day allows you to fully appreciate the beauty and culture of this remote community.

Day 14 | Laya – Chamsa (9 hours)

Begin your descent from Laya, following the trail that runs alongside the Mo Chu (Mother River of Punakha). The path winds through a mix of dense forests and open meadows, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Cross suspension bridges and enjoy the melodic sounds of flowing water. Camp overnight in the tranquil forested area of Chamsa at an altitude of 3,800m.

Day 15 | Chamsa – Gasa Tshachu (7 hours)

The trek starts with a short, gentle walk before a steep descent to the hot springs of Gasa Tshachu. Along the way, you will cross Bele-La Pass and descend through vibrant rhododendron forests. Stop for lunch at Gasa Village, where you can visit the historic Gasa Dzong, perched dramatically on a ridge. Conclude the day with a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs, known for their therapeutic properties.

Day 16 | Gasa Tshachu Rest Day

After several days of trekking, take this opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. Spend the day soaking in the hot springs or exploring the scenic surroundings. The calm atmosphere and soothing waters of Gasa Tshachu provide the perfect setting to unwind and recharge for the next leg of the journey.

Day 17 | Gasa – Punakha

Begin the scenic drive from Gasa to Punakha, winding through picturesque valleys and terraced fields. Upon reaching Punakha, visit the renowned Punakha Dzong, a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture nestled at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers. The dzong’s stunning wooden carvings and golden spires are a testament to Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. Overnight at a comfortable hotel in Punakha.

Day 18 | Punakha

Start the day with a short hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a spectacular temple perched atop a hill overlooking the valley. The hike offers breathtaking views of the surrounding rice paddies and lush greenery. In the afternoon, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, dedicated to the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley. The evening is free to explore the peaceful Punakha Valley.

Day 19 | Punakha – Thimphu

Drive to Thimphu via the scenic Dochu-La Pass, stopping briefly to admire the stunning views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Along the way, you will pass through charming villages and vibrant rhododendron forests. Once in Thimphu, visit the National Memorial Chorten, a sacred site revered by locals. Enjoy a leisurely evening exploring the city’s markets or relaxing at your hotel.

Day 20 | Thimphu

Spend the day exploring Bhutan’s capital city. Highlights include a visit to the Folk Heritage Museum, the Traditional Paper Factory, and the School for Arts and Crafts, where students are trained in Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts. Visit the majestic Tashichhodzong, Bhutan’s administrative and monastic hub, and take a short hike to Buddha Dordenma, a giant statue overlooking the city. The evening offers an opportunity to browse local handicrafts at the weekend market.

Day 21 | Thimphu – Paro

Begin the day with a visit to Changangkha Lhakhang, a historic temple perched on a ridge above Thimphu. Afterwards, take a relaxing drive back to Paro, enjoying the beautiful landscapes along the way. Upon arrival, take the opportunity to explore Paro town one last time, visiting its shops and cafes. End the day with a farewell dinner, reminiscing about your incredible journey through Bhutan.

Day 22 | Depart Paro

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your departure flight. Reflect on the memories of the Laya Trek, from the breathtaking mountain passes to the warm hospitality of the Bhutanese people. Bid farewell to the Land of the Thunder Dragon, carrying unforgettable experiences and stories. Tashi Delek!
