Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 | Arrive at Paro and Drive to Thimphu (50 km)
Arrive at Paro International Airport, where you will be greeted by your guide. After a short briefing, begin the scenic drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. En route, take in views of terraced rice fields and charming villages. Check into your hotel and spend the evening at leisure, exploring Thimphu’s bustling streets or relaxing after your journey.
Day 2 | Thimphu
Spend the day exploring the highlights of Thimphu. Visit Buddha Dordenma, a colossal golden statue overlooking the valley, and the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s unique national animal. Hike to the peaceful Tango Buddhist University, nestled in the hills. Conclude the day with a stroll through the local markets or visit the National Memorial Chorten, a landmark of spiritual significance.
Day 3 | Ride to Punakha (73 km)
Begin your ride to Punakha, crossing the scenic Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres. Pause at the pass to marvel at the 108 memorial chortens and panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas. Descend into the lush Punakha Valley and visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most iconic structures. End the day with a visit to Chimi Lhakhang, a temple known for its blessings of fertility.
Day 4 | Ride to Bumthang (212 km)
Embark on a longer ride to Bumthang, crossing three stunning mountain passes: Pelela, Yotongla, and Kikila. Stop at Chendebji Chorten, a stupa built in Nepalese style, and continue to Trongsa Dzong, the largest dzong in Bhutan. Visit the Trongsa Museum, which offers insights into Bhutan’s royal history. Arrive in Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, and settle into your hotel.
Day 5 | Explore Bumthang
Spend the day exploring Bumthang’s sacred sites and rich culture. Visit Mebartsho, also known as the Burning Lake, a revered pilgrimage site. Explore Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, and Kurjey Lhakhang, where Guru Rinpoche meditated. End the day with a visit to Bumthang Brewery to sample local beers and learn about the brewing process.
Day 6 | Ride to Gangtey Valley (155 km)
Ride to the picturesque Gangtey Valley, also known as Phobjikha Valley. This idyllic region is home to the endangered black-necked cranes during the winter months. Visit Gangtey Monastery, an important religious site, and take a leisurely walk through the serene valley. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and scenic beauty of this remote area.
Day 7 | Ride to Paro (166 km)
Undertake a long ride back to Paro, traversing Bhutan’s diverse landscapes. The route takes you through vibrant forests, terraced farmlands, and quaint villages. Arrive in Paro in the evening, and unwind at your hotel or explore the town, known for its charming streets and traditional architecture.
Day 8 | Riding Excursion to Ha (132 km)
Set out for a day ride to the remote Ha Valley, known for its peaceful surroundings and unspoiled beauty. Cross Chelela Pass, Bhutan’s highest motorable road at 3,900 metres, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Spend some time exploring Ha Valley before returning to Paro for the night.
Day 9 | Hike to Taktsang Monastery
Ride to the base of Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. Hike up to this iconic site perched dramatically on a cliffside, 900 metres above the valley floor. Explore the monastery’s spiritual and historical significance while soaking in the breathtaking views. Return to Paro for a relaxing evening.
Day 10 | Departure from Paro
